August 12th 2025.... POV of a Record Shop Owner

 Ok...  so by now unless you

2. Live off the grid in an abandoned hut in the wilderness blissfully unaware of anything (btw... do you accept boarders) 

you would be aware that August 12th 2025 was an enormous day for Swifties.  I bred one, a delightful 25 year old.... who is what she selfproclaims an O.G. fan.  She was there for the fearless tour in 2009 (she touched Taylor Swift's hair - OMG!), she was front and centre at Reputation and Era's Tour..... well I could write a novel about that weekend..... but anyone moving back to our point. 

 Yesterday was a big day.  Taylor Swift announced a New album FINALLY.... everyone could stop clowning around but also she would be announcing it on New Heights - her boyfriends podcast... I am not a therapist or relationship expert so I will leave the analysis of that to them.. personally I think it is cute. 

But we are in fact (newly established) record store owners.  So when I first got wind of the possibility yesterday morning, I flicked a few instagram posts to my daughter and went off to do my other job (you know the one that pays for you to build your passion project).  I didn't think too much more about it.  

Until the family group chat blew up and then it dawned on me....  OMG it IS happening. There is going to be a new Taylor Swift album.... but not in a good way, in an OMG I have no freakin idea what to do.  

When is it being released.  Do we order now? Do we contact our rep - I mean of course we don't but you know the strangest things go through your head when you are freaking out. 

I mean we were just open for TTPD anthology .... which we sold a few, but hey our little book and record shop had only been online for only a week so I wasn't expecting much..  But this ... this I am not prepared for... 

So last night I did what I know how to do best ... other than freak out... no seriously I built a Taylor Swift page on our website.  A little dedication to the queen herself.  Why?  Well SEO but also we needed somewhere to funnel the queries.... so for now that little page will sit there for us until we know and can answers the questions I have already been asked.....  

  • When?
  • How much?
  • How many different colours on vinyl?
  • Will it be on vinyl? 
  • How many copies will we get? 

All of that at the moment is in the hands of the Taylor Swift gods.  Our rep knows as much as us what it means for retail so we all just wait...  

And get excited like everyone else... and clown around about what exactly The Life of a Showgirl may be about?  Will it be a masterpiece in storytelling like Folklore, a poetry book of heartbreak and hope like The Tortured Poets Society or something completely new.  

And that in itself is the mastery of Taylor Swift... she knows how to create a moment, an upswell in anticipation, a movement..  if only our business could replicate 5% of her savvy... we would be huge!

My Thoughts on The Hottest 100 of Australian Songs

We’ve pulled together a Hottest 100 Vinyl Collection to celebrate the albums that feature songs from this iconic list but really I want to talk about my reaction when the number 1 was announced... I love INXS. I grew up with INXS. I remember exactly where I was the day I heard Michael Hutchence had passed... I remember when Kylie and Michael were a thing... Every few years, Triple J throws out the ultimate challenge-slash-emotional-spiral: name your top ten Australian songs of all time . Like, ever.
